10 fundraising tips for nonprofits | Humphrey Fellows at Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication - ASU: I had the privilege to attend the 51st International Conference on Fundraising held in San Antonio, Texas, by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. From March 23 to 25 , more than three thousand people attended the event, one of the biggest events on fundraising around the globe. It is difficult to summarize all the content explored there, but I highlight some trends and tips on communications and fundraising.

Keep in mind that fundraising is a relationship, and relationships are based on communication. So how do we do these things well?

SHIFT or FIESTA: AFP ICON Thoughts from a Newbie: SHIFT was the official theme at the 2014 AFP International Conference on Fundraising, however I feel Fiesta, Spanish for "festival" or "party" seemed equally apropos. Thanks to the generosity of AFP-Charlotte, I attended my first (of what will now be many) AFP ICON. This year's setting was San Antonio, TX, on the beautiful River Walk, just steps away from the Alamo. If you saw Miss Congeniality, then you know exactly what I am talking about, but I digress.

Attendees of Leah Eustace’s and Scott Fortnum’s Journey Deeper Inside the Donor’s Brain conference session were asked to fold and then tear shapes out of a piece of paper. When they held their work up, no two matched. “Every person followed the same directions with the same piece of paper and ended up with different results,” said Eustace. “Everyone thinks and behaves differently, including donors. The big challenge in fundraising is figuring out commonalities.”

When I did, the audience was watching the kickoff video, in which a very serious announcer was dramatically informing us that philanthropy was going through a revolution. I wish I had written down some of the verbiage, because it was, well, a little over-the-top.
